Houston Children's Room

It seems like ages since I have had a chance to write but I have been working all summer long on a project at a downtown Houston church...First Evangelical Lutheran to be exact. It has been a wonderfully fun time and with a very few things left to do I thought it was time to reveal what I have been doing. The church was built in the 1920's and there were challenges with old walls made from plaster and restrictions from the church from redoing the floors, but other than that it was a delightful time with wonderful people!

My watercolor sketches of what I designed the room to look like.

 The hallway
Watercolor of a dutch girl and dutch boy with red gingham buttons flank each side of the wall.

The children's program and mother's day out is called "First Friends".

From the hallway if you turn right there you would see the fun!!

Shiny red trim covers the baseboards and window sills.
We replaced fluorescent lights with church lanterns and painted them red.

Wooden cabinet doors of a shepherd and shepherdess flank both sides of the cuckoo clock.

The far wall has these three paintings.

The wooden table was made to order by the Pastor of the church.

As well as two benches that go with the table.

More pictures will be posted in a few days.

Black and White Striped Turtleneck

I have a sister in New York that loves black and white striped socks, t-shirts and turtlenecks.
So it made me think of her when I saw a parade of these birds out my farmhouse kitchen window this morning!

The bird is a "Killdeer". They like to walk and their call sounds like "kill deer"! I had never seen this bird before so I was shocked at their black and white striped turtlenecks!

Pretty cute!

Mary Moore Lowenfield's birthday window display

I thought you might want to see the beautiful birthday window that Mary Moore created for the gallery and darling store that carries her artwork in Glasgow Scotland.
Here she is standing in front of Boxwood's window she created. (the high was 50 today that calls for a coat!!)
 The 5 foot tall pig
My favorite is her 3 foot tall paper mache mouse that wears red Wellington boots!
She created this lovely 2 tiered birthday cake !
The pig with fellow party revelers!!

Here she is working on the window. Wish I could have been there!
Here is the mouse before she got to the store.
The lovely owner of Boxwood Jill had some lovely things to say about Mary Moore:

A couple of months ago we wrote a wee thing about Boxwood now being 10 years old & got a lovely response from customers & our facebookers. Then I got a call from an artist I have worked with over the past year. She had seen my note & asked if she could design & make a birthday window for us...sure thing!

Not only is Mary Moore a talented artist but also an incredibly nice person to know, so I was chuffed to bits with the offer. Based loosely round an animals birthday tea party; the building & sewing started! And now voila, we now have a 5ft pig & a 3ft mouse in our window all enjoying birthday cake with a bunch of their friends!

I am so touched that Mary Moore asked if she could do this for us, I really hope we can help generate some business her way in return. We will soon be stocking her little animal decorations & we already have her cards & prints available.
So Happy Birthday us & a big thanks to Mary Moore!

Best to come down & see it for yourselves!

Tile Backsplashes

Years ago when I started painting tiles, some of my customers were concerned that they would not be at their current houses forever and wondered if there was a way to have hand painted tiles tiles they could take with them when they moved. So....that is how i came up with the term,"portable back splashes"
